The Illinois State Archaeological Survey (ISAS), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is a joint research program of the UIUC and the Illinois Department of Transportation.  The program was created nearly five decades ago and has a permanent staff of 30+ professionals stationed in four regional offices.

LITHIC AND CERAMIC ANALYSTS

The Illinois Transportation Archaeological Research Program (ITARP), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has an immediate opening in its St. Louis area offices (Belleville and Wood River, Illinois) for a Lithic Analyst and a Ceramic Analyst. Established in 1957, ITARP is one of the oldest research and cultural resource management programs in the Eastern United States and currently employs around 50 full-time professional archaeologists.

The primary responsibility for the ceramic and lithic analysts will be to perform detailed analyses of a variety of prehistoric site assemblages and to prepare publication quality report chapters. Minimum requirements for these positions include a BA in Anthropology or closely related field, as well as experience analyzing prehistoric lithic or ceramic assemblages and producing reports. Familiarity with Eastern Woodlands archaeology is necessary and good analytical and communication skills are required, as is experience with Excel and Word computer programs. The successful candidate must be able to work with minimal supervision. Demonstrated ability to complete projects in a timely fashion is necessary. Candidates should submit a resume or c.v., as well as samples of their ceramic or lithic analyses, reports, and articles. This is an academic hourly position without benefits, but multi-year employment is possible. Salaries are commensurate with experience and relocation to the St. Louis Metro East area is required.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL FIELD TECHNICIAN

Full-time, entry-level positions are available for archaeological fieldwork at the Central Illinois Survey Division of ITARP (CISD). The CISD office is located in Champaign, and covers an area stretching from the southwest “collar” of Chicago to Marion County in the south-central portion of the state. Fieldwork includes pedestrian survey, shovel testing, and excavation. Occasional lab work will consist of general artifact processing and curation.

Prior experience is not required. Applicants must be willing to travel overnight during the workweek. Lodging and per-diem will be provided for overnight stays.

Western Illinois Field Station

The Illinois Transportation Archaeological Research Program (ITARP), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has openings beginning in November 2009 in its Macomb and Jacksonville offices for two field supervisory positions. Established in 1957, ITARP is one of the oldest research and cultural resource management programs in the Eastern United States and currently employs around 50 full-time professional archaeologists.

Position responsibilities for Field Supervisors include field survey and excavation, as well as basic artifact identification in the lab. Minimum requirements for this Field Supervisor position include a BA in Anthropology or closely related field and at least twelve months of previous supervisory experience. Candidates must have prior experience running small (5-10 person) survey/excavation crews. Familiarity with Eastern Woodlands archaeology is necessary and good field, analytical, and communication skills are required. Salaries begin at $12.50/hr and are commensurate with experience. Relocation to the Macomb area and Jacksonville area in western Illinois is required and per diem is provided for overnight stays away from these areas.
