GREECE

Graduate and post-doctoral fellowships in Geoarchaeology, human skeletal studes, and faunal studies at the Wiener Laboratory in Athens.

TRAINING IN THE UNITED STATES

In the U.S., archaeological science is not usually a separate degree program but is taught within the context of anthropology, archaeology, chemistry, materials science, or geology.

Boston University
For both undergraduate and graduate courses in an archaeology department. Boston University cooperates with the Center for Materials Research in Archaeology and Ethnology (CMRAE) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.)
Degrees in Archaeological Materials offered through Materials Science at M.I.T.

Summer Institute in the Materials Science of Material Culture (SIMSMC)
With support from the National Science Foundation, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) will convene the fourth annual Summer Institute in the Materials Science of Material Culture (SIMSMC). Fifteen faculty members from liberal arts colleges around the country, representing fields from art history to physics, will participate during the two-week period, 6-17 June 2005. Working together with these colleagues, the MIT SIMSMC faculty demonstrate, through modules that explore materials engineering in the context of material culture, how undergraduate teaching can incorporate the subject matter of materials science in imaginative and intellectually stimulating ways that are congruent with and relevant to the pursuits of liberal arts institutions. The two modules that will be presented at the June 2005 SIMSMC are: 1) The Power of Metal in the Andean World by Heather Lechtman and 2) Form, Function and Aesthetics in Colonial New England: The Use of Wood for Furniture, Houses and Boats by John Vander Sande and Samuel Allen.
SIMSMC pays participant expenses: round-trip travel to MIT, housing on campus, and meals. Visit the SIMSMC web site for an on-line application form and further information.

University of Arizona at Tuscon
Department of Anthropology promotes interdisciplinary study with other departments such as Geology and Materials Science.

University of Arizona/NSF IGERT program
The University of Arizona/ NSF IGERT Program in Archaeological Sciences is an interdisciplinary training program for PhD students intending to pursue careers in archaeological science. IGERT Fellows may be funded for a maximum of two years, and receive a stipend (currently $30,000 per annum) and full tuition costs. To be eligible for an award, students must be (a) U.S. citizens or permanent residents and (b) accepted into, or currently studying in, a PhD program at the University of Arizona. Currently-funded students are pursuing PhD degrees in Anthropology, Geosciences, Chemistry and Materials Science and Engineering. Students in other Departments may be funded if they can demonstrate their intent to pursue a career in archaeological science. Click here for Instructions for Applicants. For more information, contact the IGERT co-ordinator, Dr. David Killick at (520) 621-8685 or through email (killick@u.arizona.edu).

University of Georgia at Athens
The Center for Archaeological Sciences coordinates interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate degree programs in archaeological science.

GEOARCHAEOLOGY IN THE U.S.
For specific programs in archaeological geology (geoarchaeology), consult this Directory of Graduate Programs.

TRAINING IN CANADA

ALBERTA

University of Alberta
Both undergraduate and graduate coursework in archaeometry are offered through the department of Anthropology.
