The analysis of pigments in ceramics, frescoes, and other objects can help us understand the techniques and raw materials used in producing the artifacts. Testing of pigment composition can also be a means of authentication, especially if analysis reveals a compound that does not belong in the time period to which the artifact is dated.
The ATAM program has participated recently in several pigment projects involving Turkish and Assyrian frescoes and Byzantine ceramics.
